On Sunday 30th October from 3-7pm I was at Gwrych Castle telling stories and encouraging creative expression.
It was an amazing experience and went completely differently from what I had been expecting. As all good facilitator do I had a plan. That plan was to just do 3 x 1 hour sessions in which I would read 2 local myths and then tell one story I had written based on a ghostly tale I had been told that had happened at the Castle, and then I would get people to write a piece and share it. Like a regular writing workshop.
Well the general public had other plans and helped to shape it into an amazing afternoon for me. I do hope they all enjoyed it as much as I did. Yes I did share the myths and the story and I did get some writing and some drawing done, but that all happened so quickly and there were a queue of people waiting outside to hear more. It did help that I was in the Countess's Writing room; a room she had had specially built just so she could write and look across the bay and her gardens.
I was able to share about that and share about some of the Picturesque movement and how they planted gardens for to have organised, planted gardens looking wild. I was able to chat with 2 small boys about the deer's head and how it had been preserved. I got great feedback and was told that the story I had written myself was the best heard. In fact that was amazing when I told it. Even the young children would go quiet and listen. Of course it was helped by the fact that by 5.15 the only lights in the room where the candles and the LED torch I had been lent.
I really do hope to be able to do this another time. I have learned so much from it. Join the mailing list and then you will know when the next one is.
Today I am preparing for my first workshop in the "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" series. There are still spaces if you want to come along. Just let me know. And if you don't read this until later do feel free to drop in on "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" or find out what is happening in the New year. Both well-being and creative writing workshops will be continuing.
